Crescencia Garcia volunteered for service after the Japanese attack on Peral Harbor. She moved to New York from Puerto Rico at the age of 18 and was surprised to be placed in the segregated 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion. During World War II, the Army routinely placed Women of Color in segregated units. Once the 6888th arrived in Europe, Pvt. Garcia's training as a nurse was recognized and she was reassigned to the 6810th Hospital Center where she treated soldiers of all races.
