Podcast Interview with Janice Martin
Janice Martin discusses the renaming of a post office in Buffalo, NY after her mother and 6888th soldier, Pvt. Indiana Hunt-Martin as well as her service. Pvt. Hunt enlisted in the Women's Army Corps and went to Basic Training at Fort Oglethorpe, GA. Janice Martin remembers a story her mother told that she and a few other women in the 6888th learned to volunteer for KP duty on the ship to England, because they quickly realized they could eat well without having to stand in line. Martin also recalls that her mother told her the 6888th were housed with German prisoners in Europe. After her service, she applied for the GI Bill and worked at the New York Division of Labor. Whenever she heard of new job opportunities she passed those along to people in her community, helping many African Americans to find work.
