Nine of the first Black Army Nurses

This photo was taken at Camp Sherman, Ohio and pictures half of the first 18 Black Army Nurses. Though enrolled to treat Black soldiers, these women often worked in integrated hospital wards. Clara Rollins, one of the nurses, indicated that they were assigned to "the accident and wounded from overseas ward; the psychiatric; the observation and contagious wards; and medical wards of various types."
