She was born in Schaghticoke, New York and enlisted to help pay for college but had wanted to join the Army since she was a teenager. She went to basic training at Fort McClellan and advance training at Fort Lee and worked in medical supply. During her service, she had multiple different duty stations with medical supply, including some overseas.
