Quartermaster Maj. Frank Kriwanek asked Army nurse, Lt. Peggy Greenwalt, to keep these colors safe as the Japanese Army invaded the Philippines. Greenwalt convinced her Japanese captors that the flag was a decorative shawl until the liberation of Manila in 1945. She returned the flag to Maj. Kriwanek following the end of the war.
