Dr. Mary Walker awarded Medal of Honor

During the Civil War, Dr. Mary Walker served as assistant surgeon assigned to the 52nd Ohio Regiment in Tennessee. She frequently rode through picket lines to treat soldiers and civilians despite fear of capture. She was taken prisoner of war and imprisoned at Castle Thunder in Richmond, VA for four months. She then assumed duty as acting surgeon at the female military prison in Louisville, KY. For her service, she is awarded the Medal of Honor by President Andrew Johnson. She remains the only woman to receive the award to date.
